The Charities

Thanks to generous sponsorship from South Devon businesses every penny our walkers raise in sponsorship will go directly to Rowcroft Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support. The funds will be split equally between the seperate two charities.

Thank you for your support.

Rowcroft HospiceRowcroft Hospice provides free of charge care for people in South Devon living with life-threatening illnesses, while supporting their families and carers.

We provide physical, emotional,  social and spiritual support when people are seriously ill, to help them live life to the full, for whatever time is left – no matter how long or how short. Our diverse teams include social workers, complementary therapists, specialist nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, bereavement councillors and a chaplain.

Care and support is provided not only at the hospice itself but also by our dedicated Community Team who take all the hospices services into people’s homes, allowing families to stay living together. Rowcroft’s Day Services enables patients and their families to access the hospice’s specialist services on a sessional basis, to best suit their lifestyle and needs.

Rowcroft cares for over 1000 families every year, families living with all kinds of life-limiting illness including cancer, heart or lung failure or long term conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease or Multiple Sclerosis.  We need to raise £10,550 from voluntary contributions every day to provide this service.

2008 will see the hospice commence a 2 year a re-development project that will tackle the continuous problems that come with housing an in-patient unit in a building that is over 100 years old. The development will enable Rowcroft to provide car include single en-suite rooms, improved facilities for families and carers and above all offer the dignity, respect and comfort any one of us would wish for at such a time in our lives. Although a fundraising appeal is soon to be launched, the funds from the Big Midnight Walk, will go towards the everyday costs of running the hospice.

Thank you for supporting the hospice and for making a difference to those living with cancer and life limiting conditions.

Macmillan Cancer Support

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. One in three of us will get cancer; 1.2 million people are living with it.

Macmillan is a source of support from the point of diagnosis, helping patients, carers, families and communities. We guide people through the system, supporting them every step of the way, we fund nurses and other specialist health care professionals, and build cancer care centres, like The Lodge cancer support and information centre in Torquay.

Macmillan offers practical support, such as providing respite care to carers and lifts to hospital. People need emotional support, so Macmillan listens, advises and shares information through our CancerLine and Cancerbackup, website and cancer self help support groups. Macmillan gives benefits advice and grants (covering anything from heating bills to travel costs) to help people cope with the financial burden a cancer diagnosis can bring.

Macmillan is a force for change, listening to people affected by cancer and working together with them to improve cancer care. People who live with cancer are experts by experience. Together we use this knowledge to make a positive difference to the lives of people affected by cancer. This could be anything from getting a coffee machine installed in a waiting room, to bringing about changes in the law. Macmillan fights discrimination – from challenging unfair travel costs and insurance policies to improving the national benefits system.

Macmillan is changing Government policy – as shown by the Cancer Reform Strategy which sets out the future of cancer services in England for the next 5 years. The Strategy contains many things for which we had actively campaigned and will make a real difference to the care, support and treatment of people affected by cancer both during and after treatment.

Macmillan is entirely dependent on voluntary donations. We believe we can all help, either by raising money, by giving time or by sharing experiences. We are Macmillan.
